Indian Territorial Army recently celebrated 61 years of its existence. The history of the Indian Territorial Army dates back to Oct 9, 1949. Territorial Army also known as ‘Citizens’ Army’ is an army volunteer reserve. Territorial Army in India is not a profession, or source of employment. Volunteers receive training for few days in a year and in time of crisis are mobilized to support the regular forces. Territorial Army in India supports regular army, and provides assistance in specific tasks such as protection of military sites, and also helps in ecological restoration. They also provide units to the regular army. Territorial Army units have been actively involved in armed conflicts and aid during natural calamities.
