Ladakh is known to many of us as a scenic high altitude tourist destination.  However, the terrain of Ladakh is such that many villages do not have access to electricity and hence rely on diesel generators for their power supply. An NGO called Ladakh Ecological Development Group is working on installing Solar Photovoltaic plants to replace generators.Through its use of solar power the NGO is encouraging the citizens of Ladakh to heat rooms, use in cooking stoves, and use of local insulation materials in conserving heat.  The Ladakh Ecological Group has been awarded the Right Livelihood Award for its work.
