West Bengal Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee may be thinking of a “painless transformation” of the entire two-stroke auto fleet into LPG(Liquid Petroleum Gas)  mode, but the ground reality could be far different. Sources say that the government plans to begin with a much lower figure of  just 11,000 autos and is likely to end the process far short of the 69,000 three-wheelers that were plying in the city till the other day.  A pointer towards this is the money allocated for government subsidy to help the conversion. The transport department has Rs 11 crore in its kitty barely enough for 11,000 autos, if each auto owner gets Rs 10,000 as announced by the government. This suggests that the switchover plan may not include all the autos even though they may have all the valid papers.
