Forest Act has been made flexible and hence farmers can earn income by growing sandalwood in their land.Government has released Rs 2 crore for developing sandalwood. A ton of sandalwood is Rs 20 lakh worth, and the farmers have the right to sell the trees in their land either to Forest department or to any specified company. The Central government is giving 100 per cent subsidy to grow bamboo, the wood of the poor. There are over 1200 varieties of bamboo. Growing bamboo will give employment and financial strength to the farmers.
